Mountain Hengshan

Mountain Hengshan, also called Ziyue was renowned as "North Mountain (Bei Yue)", one of the Five Sacared Mountains in China. Mt.Heng is located about 62 kilometers south to Datong city, famous for the natural scenery and man-made landscaping.

Hengshan has historically been a sacred place for Taoism and a venue for Taoist activities. Legend has it that Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Immortals in Chinese Taoist mythology, secluded himself on Mt. Hengshan, where he continues to follow the teachings of Taoism.

Things to see in Mt.Hengshan

Hanging Monastery – a temple was built in northern Wei Dynasty (386-534), which stands on the high cliff and supported by dozens of wooden pillars. There are some small halls in the temple with sculptures of Buddhism, Confucius and Taoism inside.

Tianfeng Summit is the highest peak of Mountain Heng. The northern slop is covered with verdant pine trees and the south has lots of temples where emperors worshipped the North Mountain.

Golden Dragon Gore is in the center of Tianfeng Summit and Cuiping summit, it acts as a natural defense barrier of strategic importance to military commanders.

Beiyun Miao or Baiyuan Temple is the only Taoist temple on Mountain Heng. It is located on the West Hill concealing itself in true, humble Taoist fashion among dense pines.
