Nanshan Temple

Nanshan Temple, located 40 kilometers from Sanya City in Hainan Province is the largest Buddhist preaching site established since the 1949 founding of The People’s Republic of China. Located at the foot of Nanshan Mountain, the temple complex was completed in 1998, the 2,000th anniversary of Buddhist coming to China from India.

The temple complex occupies an area of 66 acres, with the temple buildings having a floor space of 40,000 square meters. The architecture of the temple complex replicate the architecture of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The temple’s architecture and layout, combined with the outside spaces and greenery make it a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Sanya City. The treasure of the temple is the Golden Jade Guanyin Statue. The statue is 3.8 meters high and is covered with 100 kilograms of gold and silver, and has over 120 carats of diamonds decorating its surface. The centerpiece of the temple is the South China Sea Guanyin. It is a 108 meter tall copper statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva. It is located out in the sea, which is reached by a bridge. Its size is breathtaking and the artistry with which it was created is incredible.

The temple has a very famous vegetarian restaurant for those who wish to taste traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine.
