Pingyao Ancient City Wall

Pingyao’s Ancient City wall has a history of more than 2,700 years and is in a surprisingly good state of preservation. The wall has a total length of 6 kilometers and is 12 meters tall and averages 5 meters wide at the top. It was constructed of compacted earth covered with ricks and stones. It has six city gates and it is said that it resembles a giant tortoise with the gates representing the four legs, head, and tail of the tortoise. The southern gate of the ancient city wall is said to be the head with the two wells there being the tortoise’s eyes. The wall has 72 watchtowers and 3,000 external battlements.
