Wenshu Temple
Wenshu Monastery (Manjushri Monastery), located at No. 15 Wenshu Yuan Street, Chengu, Sichuan Province, is the best-preserved Buddhist temple in China.
Originally built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the temple’s original name was the Xinxiang Temple. In 1681, Cidu a Buddhist Monk came to the temple. He built a simple shack between two trees and lived for several years there. When he died, his body was cremated and in the flames, an image of Wenshu appeared in the flames causing people to believe he was the reincarnation of the Bodisattva Wenshu. The name of the temple was then changed to Wenshu Temple. The temple is home to many cultural relics including over 500 paintings and calligraphy painted by renowned artists. The temple is famous for its gardens and solemn atmosphere.
