Famous Rivers in China
Yangtze River
The Chang Jiang (Long River), known in English as the Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world. The river flows through the famous Three Gorges and is home to the Three Gorges Dam, the largest dam on earth. A Yangtze River cruise is very popular with visitors to China due to the natural beauty of the river and the many historical and cultural sites along it. The boats cruising the river are like floating hotels.
Yellow River

The second largest river in China, the 5,464 kilometer Yellow River flows through nine Chinese provinces before emptying into the Bohai Sea. Commonly referred to as “the cradle of Chinese civilization”, the river was the most prosperous region in early Chinese history and was the birthplace of many northern Chinese civilizations. The river got its name from the yellow silt which it carries which make the waters yellow. Four of China’s provinces get their name from the Yellow River. Hebei and Hubei translate as “north of the river” and Henan and Hunan translate as “south of the river”.

Huangpu River
A branch of the Yangtze River, the Huangpu River flows through Shanghai. The mother river of Shanghai, the river flows past some of Shanghai’s best tourist attractions and there are cruises available during the day and early evening. The river passes by The Bund, The Oriental Tower, Jinmao Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center. The river is 114 kilometers (71 miles) long and has an average depth of 9 meters (30 feet). Recently the Shanghai port has grown to become the largest throughput port in China.

Li River
The Li River which flows from through Guangxi is famous for a particular stretch which flows from Guilin, to Yangshuo and no visit to Guilin is complete without the Li River Cruise. This section of river passes Guilin’s karst mountains, which are famous throughout the world and a common backdrop for major Hollywood motion pictures. Cruising down the Li River will take visitors past ancient villages, bamboo groves, and incredible mountains. Along the river local women can be seen washing their laundry in the river and fishermen ply their trade on simple bamboo rafts. A cruise down the Li River feels like stepping into a traditional Chinese painting come to life.

West Lake
There is no child in China who doesn’t know the legends of West Lake. The lake is famous for the legends that surround it and it is the dream destination of most Chinese people. The river has been the subject of poetry and art and has drawn people to it for thousands of years. In the middle of the lake are three islands. On each island are pavilions for visitors to view the lake. There are cruises around the lake and they are a great way to fully appreciate West Lake because guides will tell the different legends which surround each area of the lake.
Qinghai Lake

Located in Qinghai Province, Qinghai Lake is a saline lake which the largest inland and salt water lake in China. The lake and surrounding area is incredibly beautiful and the views change with the seasons. The deep blue lake colored water is said to have seven different colors depending on the depth. Located in the center of the lake is an island which is home to a temple and hermitages. During the summer, the monks were unable to get off or get to the island, but in the winter they would walk across the frozen lake’s surface to reach the shore.

Namtso Lake
A mountain lake located in Tibet, Namtso Lake translates as “Heavenly Lake”. Known as one of the most beautiful natural wonders of Tibet, the lake has been a destination for Buddhist pilgrims for centuries. Namtso Lake is the highest salt water lake in the world. The island is surrounded by snow capped mountains which add to the beauty of the lake. It is a magical place that shouldn’t be missed on any Tibet tour.

Erhai Lake
The English translation for “Erhai” is “Ear-shaped Sea. Located in Yunnan Province, the lake is 1,972 meters above sea level and it is the second largest highland lake in China. Sandwiched between the ancient city of Dali City and the Changshan Mountains, the lake is a favorite place to hike for locals and visitors. The lake is surrounded by temples, ancient villages and has several islands. Bordered by fields of flowers, the lake is particularly beautiful in the spring.
