Henan

Henan, Yu for short, is a province located in the Northern Central Region of China. It shares its borders with six other provinces, Shandong to the northeast, Hebei to the north, Shanxi to the northwest, Shaanxi to the west, Hubei to the south, and Anhui to the east. The eastern portion is flat and fertile part of the North China Plain, one of the most densely populated areas of China, even on Earth (with almost 100 million people). The mountainous west and southwest is more remote with vast expanses of forest.The Yellow River - the mother river of the Chinese nation runs through Henan.

Widely regarded as the birthplace of Chinese civilization with over 5,000 years of history along with Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces, Henan is known for its historical prosperity and periodic downturns, and remained China's cultural, economical, and political center until approximately 1,000 years ago.

Henan has an amazing history and is home to some of the most incredible ancient sites and cultures in China. Numerous heritages have been left behind including the ruins of Shang Dynasty capital city Yin and the Shaolin Temple. Four of the Eight Great Ancient Capitals of China, Luoyang, Anyang, Kaifeng, and Zhengzhou are located in Henan.

The world famous Shaolin Temple is home to Chinese Shaolin fighting monks. Shaolin Kung-fu has been practiced for over 1,500 years and is one of the most famous martial arts on earth. The Longmen Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is filled with incredible Buddhist carvings which date back, as early as the 5th century. The carvings in the grottoes are incredibly beautiful and their detail, size, and state of preservation is amazing. The White Horse Temple, located in Luoyang, was the first Buddhist Temple in China. It was dedicated to the horse who brought back the first Buddhist Sutras from India. These sites, and so much more await visitors to this incredible province.

Attractions

Shaolin Temple

Located outside of Dengfeng City in China's Henan Province, the Shaolin Temple is perhaps the most famous Buddhist Temple on earth. It was included on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2010. The temple is home to the famous Shaolin fighting monks.

Guanlin Temple

Guanlin Temple is located about 7 kilometers south of Luoyang city; it is also called General Guan’s Tomb, where the head of General Guanyu was buried.

Xiangguo Temple

Located in Kaifeng, in China’s Henan Province, the Xianguo Temple was first constructed in the Northern Qi Dynasty (550-557). The temple is in the western section of Kaifeng City and is one of the ten most famous temples in Chinese history.
