Shanghai Old Lane

Famous as Beijing Hutongs, Shanghai Old Lanes (Nongtang in Chinese) are a pattern of local residence. It is very close to the people’s daily life in Shanghai.

Many stories, literary quotations and celebrities came out from the old lanes, together with pavilions at Shiku Gate. It is not only the distinctive architecture, but also a kind of cultural space for local people in Shanghai.

Nongtang, a name local people called the old lanes in Chinese. It has quite a difference but something influential between architecture in western countries and that of Chinese tradition. It is one of the most outstanding features fo modern produce.

For the lanes, Chinese people in different place called them differently. In Shanghai, they were called Nongtang which is famous for their cozy old lane houses.

The old lanes link houses or architectural groups through the district. Districts devided by road or street in city were called Lifang ‘里坊’, which is a basic unit of the administration in the past. Within the district, each group of house or architecture has its style.

Located in districts, close to the subway station, some old lane houses are the perfect place for a day visit.
