Iron Pagoda

Located in Kaifeng City in China’s Henan Province, the Iron Pagoda is the centerpiece of Iron Pagoda Park. It has been known as the most beautiful pagoda in China for centuries. It was built in the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

Although named the ‘iron’ pagoda, it is made of bricks coated with glazed bricks. From a distance, the glazed bricks look like they are made of iron. The pagodas design and shape copy that of wooden pagodas, including the interior structure. The pagoda is over 55 meters high and has thirteen layers. The glazed bricks which coat the outside are engraved with more than 50 patterns such as; Buddhist figures, flowers, lions, and Qilin. The interior of the pagoda has a spiral staircase which offers bird’s-eye views of the surrounding area, from the top.
