Chengdu, Chongqing Add Train Services to Xinjiang

Chengdu railway bureau will launch two additional train services to Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region from Chengdu and Chongqing on Sept 1-12, in a move to manage heavy demand during that period.

The two additional services are the train K4978/5 from Chengdu to Xinjiang’s Urumqi and K4968/5 from Chongqing North to Urumqi.

September is the cotton harvest season. Every year in September, a mass of farmers in Sichuan and Chongqing travel to Xinjiang, a large cotton producing region, to work as seasonal workers, leading to a travel peak.

This year, it is estimated that about 30,000 farmers will travel to Xinjiang to seek work opportunities, according to an official of the Chengdu railway bureau.
