Shanxi

Shanxi is a province of the People's Republic of China, located in the North China region. Its one-character abbreviation is Jin, after the state of Jin that existed here during the Spring and Autumn Period. The capital of the province is Taiyuan.

The name Shanxi means "mountain west", which refers to the province's location west of the Taihang Mountains. lies in the middle reaches of the Yellow River and on the eastern edge of the Loess Plateau. It Shanxi borders Hebei to the east, Henan to the south, Shaanxi to the west, and Inner Mongolia to the north and is made up mainly of a plateau bounded partly by mountain ranges. The Yellow, Haihe, and Fenhe Rivers flow through Shanxi, whose splendid landscape is graced by the celebrated Taihang and Liliang Ranges and Hengshan and Wutai Mountains. Most parts of the province are more than 1000 meters above sea level.

Shanxi's long history is traced back to the days when it was a major cradle of Chinese civilization. In remote antiquity, southern Shanxi was the domain of three legendary kings, Yao (capital: Pingyuan or present day Linfen), Shen (capital: Puban or present day Yongji) and Yu (capital: Anyi or present day Xiaxian County).

A rich cultural heritage mixes with natural wonders to form Shanxi's bustling tourist scene. Datong, Wutai Mountain, Taiyuan, Pingyao, Linfen, and Yuncheng are locations full of historic and cultural significance. Several sites in Shanxi are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Shanhua Monastery

Shanhua Temple covering an area of nearly 14,000 square meters, and the three main buildings are The Gate, the Hall of Three Saints and Daxiong Bao Dian.

Pingyao Ancient City Wall

Pingyao's Ancient City wall has a history of more than 2,700 years and is in a surprisingly good state of preservation. The wall has a total length of 6 kilometers and is 12 meters tall and averages 5 meters wide at the top.

Qiao Mansion

The Qiao Mansion, located in the suburbs of Pingyao is breathtaking. Its size, complexity, and architectural design never fails to impress. It was built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) by the Qiao Family, the richest family in China.

Huayan Temple

Huayan temple or Huayan Monastery is an ancient temple in downtown area of Datong Shan’xi province; just located on Daxi Street on the south western of the city. The monastery was originally built in Liao Dynasty and was regarded as an ancestral temple for emperors.

Ming Qing Street

Pingyao's Ming Qins Street was the busiest shopping street in Pingyao. The street is lined with ancient shops, including some historically important ones. In the flagstone street, lines can be seen worn into the stone by centuries of carriages.

Hanging Monastery

Hanging Monastery also called Xuankong Si, is a temple stands at the foot of Mountain Hengshan. The temple is about 65 kilometers south of Datong downtown, and could be reached by 1-hour’s drive.

Mountain Hengshan

Mountain Hengshan, also called Ziyue was renowned as "North Mountain (Bei Yue)", one of the Five Sacared Mountains in China. Mt.Heng is located about 62 kilometers south to Datong city, famous for the natural scenery and man-made landscaping.

Mountain Wutai

Mountain Wutai, also called Wutai Mountain or Qingliang Mountain, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Wutai County, Xinzhou Region of Shanxi province. It is a Buddhist sacred site and as famous as Mt. Emei in Sichuan, Mt. Putuo in Zhenjiang and Mt.Jiuhua in Anhui.

Nine-Dragon Wall Datong

The Nine Dragon Screen Datong, is the oldest and largest screen wall in China, another two similar walls are from Beihai Park and Forbidden City of Beijing.

Yungang Grottoes

The Yungang cave is located 16km south-west of Datong city, in the valley of the Shi Li river at the base of the Wuzhou Shan Mountains; and can be reached for 30 minutes car.

Zhenguo Temple Pingyao

Zhengguo Temple is about 10 kilometers away from the northeast of Pingyao, in the village of Hadongcun Shanxi province. The temple was originally built in 963 in northern Han dynasty

Shuanglin Temple

Located outside of Pingyao, the Shuanglin Temple is full of surprises. The temple is home to more than 2,000 sculptures carved during the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. The name ‘Shuanglin’ means ‘Double Forest’.

Wang Mansion

Located in the suburbs of Pingyao, the Wang Mansion is a luxurious residential compound built during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The mansion occupies an area of 150,000 square meters and has 231 courtyards and over 2,000 buildings.

Jinci Temple

Jinci Temple is located 25 kilometers to the southeast of downtown Taiyuan City, at the foot of Mount Xuanweng. Jinci temple has a long history, and can be traced back to western zhou dynasty

Pingyao Tianyuankui Guesthouse

Any trip to Pingyao should include a visit to the Ri Shengchang Money Exchange Museum and a stay at the Tian Yuan Kui Guesthouse. Yide Hotel

It was opened up on the basis of the family courtyard of a Shanxi merchant named Hou Wangbin. It was built in 1736, consisting of 6 courtyards, including the house owners' yard, the servants' yard, the study yard, the yard of carriages and horses and a garden. The lanes connecting the six yards are paved with flag stone. Each of the courtyards is an intact Siheyuan decorated with delicate arches and exquisite carvings.
