Dali

Dali is a city in Yunnan Province in China famous for its old town, zillions of cafes and bars, and handicrafts and batique fabric. One of Yunnan most popular tourist destinations, Dali is famed for its historic sites and 'Westerner Street'. The Three Pagodas, located outside the ancient city are the only set of three pagodas in China. Their beautiful surroundings and fantastic design make them some of the most famous pagodas in the world. A visitor favorite, Westerner Street is lined with pubs and restaurants run by English speakers and serving Western food and drinks.

Dali is one of the most popular spots for independent China travellers and hugely popular with those working, teaching and studying in China. 50 minutes by plane or three to four hours by bus from Kunming, Dali is the perfect place to relax.

Dali is the capital city of the prefecture of the same name. It consists of Dali New City and Dali Old Town. Travellers visit Dali Old Town for its traditional architecture, minority cultures (mostly Bai but also with many Yi and Hui) and simply to relax. The Old Town has a population of 40,000 and the entire Dali Prefecture around three million people and an area of over 10,000 sq km. When discussing Dali, it is important to be clear whether you are talking about the entire city or just the Old Town. There is actually much to do and see in Dali City well outside the Old Town.

With the beautiful Cangshan Mountains a short distance to the west of Dali Old Town (4,122 metres at the peak) and Erhai Lake a few km to the east, it has a perfect natural setting. The climate is temperate with moderate summers and mild winters, though it can get rather windy in autumn and winter. Despite its fame as a backpacker heaven, Chinese tourists hugely outnumber foreigners. Chinese tourists tend to stay in nearby Xiaguan Town so Dali becomes thankfully quiet in the evenings. Dali has recently been overshadowed by nearby Lijiang, and many foreign tourists either bypass it or give it 1-2 days stay. Dali deserves better than 1-2 days stay.

Butterfly Spring

The Butterfly Spring is situated at the foot of Yunnong Peak of Cangshan Mountain. The water here is crystal clear and the place where the spring bubbles up attracts people with its tranquility.

Zhou Old Business Town

Located outside of Yunnan Dali City, the Zhou Village is a beautiful and unique village populated by the Bai Ethnic Minority Group. The village is situated at the foot of Cangshan Mountain, which adds to the beauty of it.

Dali Sanyue Street

Located at the foot of the Zhonghe Peak, the Sanyue Street is a traditional trade fair for Bai people in Dali. The fairs are held in March in lunar year and it last for 5 to 7 days.

Xizhou Village

Dali ancient Xizhou Village is featured by its Bai Ethnic Minority architecture with famous mansions such as the Yan Compound and the Hou Compound. The village flourished in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and became well known as home to tea merchants.

Dali Ancient Town

Yunnan Dali Ancient Town's location and architectural beauty make it a favorite with visitors for architecture and culture of the Bai Ethnic Minority Groups, which gives the town a unique atmosphere and appearance.

Erhai Lake

Dali Erhai Lake has an ear shape covering an area of 250 square kilometers, 1,972 meters above sea level. The lake is an important fish source of food for the local Bai Ethnic Minority Groups.

Dali Bai Prefecture Museum

With high roofs and yellow tiles, the imposing architecture of Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture Museum (Dali Municipal Museum), stands in Xiaguan's northeast sector near the approach to Erhai Park.

Yunnan Yi

Located in Xiangyun County, Bai Autonomous Prefecture of Dali City, Yunnan Yi gets its name due to the establishment in Yunnan, Ming and Qing Dynasty; it belongs to the old haunt of Yunnan County in Han Dynasty and Yunnan Shire in Wei and Jin Dynasty.

Chongshengsi Three Pagodas

Outside the Dali Ancient Town, the Three Pagodas are arranged in a triangular pattern and the temple complex are back up to the Cangshan Mountains and face Erhai Lake. It is said that the pagodas were built to protect the people living in the area.
