Transportation in Datong
Datong by Flight
Datong Airport has been in service since 2005; it is located in the north of Beijiaozao Datong County, about 17 kilometers (10.6 miles from urban Datong). There are flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Changzhi and Guangzhou. There are free shuttle buses from downtown Datong to airport; travelers can takes the buses from Datong Hotel, Datong Continental Hotel, and Civil aviation ticket office located at Yingbin Datong Road.
The Taiyuan Wusu Airport is another airport that Travelers can start their travel to Datong. But there’s no direct bus between Wusu airport and Datong downtown; travelers need to go to Taiyuan urban area then take buses/trains to Datong.
By Train
Datong is the mail coal producing city in China and the coal are mainly transported to other parts of China by railway. Domestic railways like Beijing to Baotou or even international railways to Erlianhaote and Moscow all join in Datong, and travel in and out Datong though railway is quite convenient.
It takes about 6 hours for traveling between Datong and Beijing, 9 hours to Hangzhou and 10 Hours to Guangzhou from Datong, there are also trains to Xi’an, Hangzhou, Taiyuan and Shuozhou in total of 25 cities in China.
The railway station is located at North Xinjian Road and can be reached by Bus Nos. 2, 3-2, 4, 8, 15, 30, 35, and 42
Taxi & Public Bus in Datong
The public bus of Datong city is fully developed and the cost varies according to the distance.
The basic charge for taxi is rmb 5 and 1.2 yuan or 1.4 yuan is charged for every one kilometer. Normally it costs 8 to 10 yuan from the city center to the railway station by taxi.
Long Distance Bus / Coach
There are four long-distance bus stations in Datong, namely Datong South Long-distance Bus Station, Datong North Long-distance Bus Station, Datong Xinpingwang Long-distance Bus Station and Datong Xinnan Long Distance Bus station.
Datong South Long-distance Bus Station has buses to major cities of China including Beijing, Tangshan, Shijiazhuang, Luoyang, Jinan, Chongqing and so on; and the North Long-distance Bus Station is at the west of Datong Railway Station, has buses to Taiyuan and Shuozhou; Datong Xinpingwang Long-distance Bus Station, located 100 meters south of Department Store of Mining Affairs Bureau, mainly runs the long-distance buses to other cities, counties and townships in Shanxi Province as well as Beijing.Datong Xinnan Long-distance Bus Station, located at No.699 South Xinjian Road, mainly runs the long-distance buses to Taiyuan, Shuozhou and Beijing.
