Datong is located in the north of Shanxi province China; it is one of the twenty-four famous historical cities, with many valuable historical and cultural sites which could be dated back to Northern Wei State more than 1,500. Unlike the cities from south China, Datong is a city full of ancient feel.
Things to do in Datong Urban Area
Datong was originally the capital of Northern Wei (386 – 534) and Buddhism developed fast in China during this period. Many temples, pagodas and Buddhism architectures were built in Datong at that time.
In the downtown area of Datong, there are some sites we highly recommend for a visit, including Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, Nine Dragon Screen Wall. This could be arranged for a one-day city tour in Datong.
Things to see around Datong City
It seems all the majestic sites like Yungang Grottoes, Hanging Temple, Yingxian Wooden Pagoda and Mountain Wutai are all outside the city downtown. Most of these sites could be reached by around 1.5 hours drive.
