Perched 2,189 meters above sea level atop the Changbai Mountains, Heaven Lake (Tianchi) is China’s deepest volcanic crater lake and the crown jewel of this UNESCO biosphere reserve, straddling the border between China and the DPRK. Formed by ancient volcanic eruptions, this oval sapphire water body is embraced by 16 jagged snow-capped peaks, serving as the source of three major rivers: the Songhua, Tumen and Yalu Rivers.
Renowned for its mysterious charm, the lake is often veiled by drifting mist, and only around one-third of travelers are lucky enough to witness its full crystal-blue surface on clear days. In summer, its mirror-like waters reflect rolling peaks and fluffy clouds; in winter, it freezes into a vast blue ice wonderland wrapped in thick snow.
As a sacred natural and cultural landmark, it boasts well-developed viewing platforms on north, west and south slopes for panoramic photography. Whether you are a hiking enthusiast, landscape photographer or cultural traveler, Heaven Lake offers an unforgettable fairyland journey of pristine alpine scenery and breathtaking natural grandeur.
