First Beacon Tower is situated southwest of Jiayuguan Fort in Gansu. Erected in the Ming Dynasty, it serves as the westernmost outpost of Jiayuguan’s Great Wall defense system, widely known as the starting pier of the western Great Wall. Perched beside the Taolai River valley, it occupies a crucial military position to observe movements across the frontier.
The original rammed-earth beacon tower has weathered centuries of fierce desert winds and sandstorms. Within the scenic zone, reconstructed military camps, suspension bridges and sentry facilities vividly reproduce the tough garrison life of ancient frontier soldiers. From the viewing platform, visitors are greeted by sweeping vistas: endless Gobi desert, snow-capped Qilian Mountains and the winding river valley stretching into the horizon.
Paired with Jiayuguan Fort and the Overhanging Great Wall, it forms a complete defensive chain of the Ming Great Wall. The vast wilderness delivers a solemn, desolate frontier vibe, perfect for outdoor photography.
