Tianchi Heavenly Lake


Tianchi Heavenly Lake nestles on the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains, close to Urumqi, Xinjiang. It is a well-known alpine barrier lake famed for its ethereal scenery. Surrounded by towering snow-capped Bogda Peak, dense coniferous forests and rolling grasslands, the crystal-clear blue lake sits amid grand mountain landscapes, creating a picturesque paradise widely praised in ancient Chinese legends.
Formed by glacial movements, the lake maintains tranquil water all year round. In summer, wild flowers bloom across the shore, bringing refreshing coolness away from the heat; in winter, the lake freezes over, transformed into a vast quiet ice field wrapped in snow. Visitors can take boat cruises on the water, hike along mountain trails, and capture breathtaking views of snow peaks mirrored on the lake surface.

As a classic stop on the Xinjiang travel route, it perfectly combines glacial landscapes, alpine forests and pastoral scenery. Far from desert vistas of Gansu, it presents a totally different side of Northwest China.
