Kalajun Grassland
Kalajun Grassland, located in Tekes County of Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, is renowned as one of the most stunning rolling grasslands in the Tianshan Mountains. Its name originates from the Kazakh language, meaning "a dark blue ridge", which perfectly describes its unique undulating terrain covered by thick lush grass.
Unlike flat grasslands, Kalajun features wave-like rolling hills that stretch endlessly into the distance. Every summer, green meadows are dotted with clusters of wild flowers in purple, yellow and pink. Herds of cattle, sheep and horses wander leisurely on the soft grassland, while scattered yurts decorate the vast pastoral landscape. Standing on the viewing platform, visitors can overlook layers of rolling hills, dense mountain forests and distant snow-capped peaks, forming a spectacular three-dimensional natural painting.
There are well-built sightseeing roads and hiking routes across the scenic area. Travelers can go horse riding, take grassland sightseeing buses, camp in designated areas and experience authentic Kazakh nomadic culture. Famous for its amazing sunrise and sunset views, Kalajun Grassland is a top destination for photographers and nature lovers, letting people fully appreciate the magnificent and gentle natural charm of Ili’s alpine grasslands.
