Hongcun Fish Lantern Festival, a celebrated intangible cultural heritage in Huizhou, is held in the ancient village of Hongcun, Yixian County, Huangshan, Anhui. Rooted in a centuries-old folk tradition, it symbolizes abundance and prosperity (the Chinese character for “fish” sounds like “surplus”).
1. Fish Lantern Craftsmanship
The fish lanterns are traditional handiworks:
- Frame: Bamboo strips bent into the shape of fish.
- Cover: Covered with translucent paper or silk, painted with colorful scales and eyes.
- Size: Ranging from small hand-held ones to over 3 meters long for the parade.
2. Festival & Parade
- Schedule: Year-round shows every Friday & Saturday, 18:30–19:30; grander events during Spring Festival and Lantern Festival.
- Route: Starts at Nanhu Academy, crosses the Painting Bridge, passes the Moon Pond, and winds through ancient alleys.
- Scene: As night falls, dozens of illuminated fish lanterns sway like swimming spirits, their reflections shimmering in the water, creating a dreamlike “night fish dragon dance”.
3. Cultural Charm
More than a visual feast, it’s a living heritage experience. Visitors can:
