Zhanqiao Pier is the most iconic landmark of Qingdao, located in Shinan District stretching into Qingdao Bay. Initially built in 1892 as a military dock, it was reconstructed in 1931 to a full length of 440 meters. At its far sea end sits Huilan Pavilion, a two-story octagonal Chinese-style pavilion topped with golden glazed tiles and supported by 24 vermilion pillars. A spiral staircase inside leads to the upper floor, where tourists enjoy a full panoramic sea view.
This scenic view named “Flying Pavilion Returning Waves” tops Qingdao’s Ten Famous Sights. Notably, Huilan Pavilion is printed on the Tsingtao Beer logo, making it a world-famous symbol of the city. The pier walkway is free for visitors; many come to watch seagulls, feel sea breezes and take photos. Neat gardens lie along the shore, creating a peaceful coastal leisure spot beloved by locals and tourists all year round.
