Penglai Pavilion

Perched on the reddish Danya Cliff by the Bohai Sea in Penglai District, Yantai, Shandong, Penglai Pavilion was first built in 1061 during the Northern Song Dynasty. It ranks among China’s Four Great Ancient Pavilions, alongside Yellow Crane Tower, Yueyang Tower and Tengwang Pavilion, and is a national 5A scenic spot as well as a key cultural relic protection site.

The two-story wooden main pavilion forms a grand complex with Tianhou Palace, Dragon King Temple, Lüzu Hall and other Taoist buildings. Famous as the “Fairyland on Earth”, it is the birthplace of the timeless legend of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea, where each immortal displayed unique magic to sail across waves.

This cliffside spot is also the best viewing place for mirages, a rare magical maritime spectacle. Stepping onto the pavilion, visitors enjoy sweeping sea views, admire ancient calligraphy stone tablets, and feel the blend of Taoist fairy culture, coastal scenery and profound thousand-year history, making it a must-visit landmark on Shandong’s Jiaodong Peninsula.
